Reading Notes: Brer Rabbit, Part A

 Main Characters:

  • Brer Rabbit
  • Brer Fox

Important things to remember:

  • The Calamus Root
    • This whole story is written in very broken/old English
    • Brer Fox had always tried to eat Brer Rabbit, but they decided to make up and be friends and have dinner together at Brer Rabbit's house
    • Brer Fox claimed to be sick and said Brer Rabbit should come over instead
    • Brer Rabbit went over but was unsettled and left to get a calamus root to season the chicken they were to eat
    • When he left he saw that Brer Fox was not actually sick and was faking to try to lure him in
  • The Wonderful Tar-Baby Story
    • Brer Fox devised a plan to trap Brer Rabbit, and created a tar baby and placed it in the road
    • When Brer Rabbit came by he tried to talk to the tar baby but it did not talk back
    • He punched the tar baby for being disrespectful and then got stuck to it
    • Brer Fox came out of the bushes laughing, and said they would have dinner together
  • How Mr. Rabbit was Too Sharp for Mr. Fox
    • Brer Fox continued to taunt Brer Rabbit, and said today was the day he barbecued him
    • Brer Fox contemplated the best way to kill Brer Rabbit aloud, and Brer Rabbit continued to beg to not be killed by being thrown in the brier patch
    • This was a cunning plan by Brer Rabbit
    • Brer Fox wanted to kill Brer Rabbit in the worst way possible, so he decided to throw him in the brier patch, which actually freed Brer Rabbit from the tar baby and he escaped
  • The Awful Fate of Mr. Wolf
    • Mr. Wolf decided to take partnership with Brer Fox, and to get into Brer Rabbit's house went to his door and said the dogs were after him and he needed to be hidden
    • He hid in a box and Mr. Wolf did not known that Brer Rabbit locked the box
    • Brer Rabbit began to boil water and create a hole in the top of the box, having an excuse for all of Mr. Wolf's questions
    • He then filled the box with the steaming water and killed Mr. Wolf


Brer Rabbit stuck to the Tar Baby, via Brer Rabbit Unit

Week 2 Story - Tricksters: The Burglar, The Security Guard, and the Curator

 The Masked Bandit was one of the most elusive burglars the world had ever seen. In and out, no detection, no witnesses, ever- until one cool fall night.  The burglar wore his big puffy black jacket this cold night, easy for stuffing any extra loot not fitting inside his duffel. It was his good luck charm, at least he thought so. Another perfect heist, the priceless jewels of the biggest museum in the world, all his... until at the last second his jacket got caught in the safe. The undetectable man, trying to free himself from the restraints he put himself in, was detected.
