Week 3 Story: The Chosen Ant

 The Chosen Ant

Many years ago, a very smart farmer began to toy around with genetics, creating a new species of insect. These small and ground-limited insects were named "Ants", and the farmer loved his creation and kept them close by on the farm to watch over them. However, in time, the ants began to rebel against the wishes of the farmer. As a whole, the species were lazy, always fighting with each other, and selfish in only looking out for themselves in food collection. The farmer noticed these changes, and were displeased with his creation, except for one ant whom he named Moah. Moah respected the farmer, still following the guidelines that were set in the beginning. One day, the farmer pulled Moah out of the boundaries of the farm to tell him he was going to start the population over, in hopes the next to come would be more respectful to his wishes. Moah understood, as he had seen the changes in the actions of his species. However, the farmer told Moah he had found favor with him. The farmer instructed Moah and his family to create a raft out of twigs and leaves on the farm, so when the farmer flooded their living area, Moah and his family would survive. When Moah returned to the culture, he warned the other ants of what he had been told, but all except his family laughed at him and continued in their ways. Moah and his sons began to construct the raft on their own, taking four months to finally complete it. Once it was complete, Moah loaded his family onto the raft and the farmer flooded the art farm. The flood waters stayed for two weeks, drowning all inhabitants except for Moah's family. The floodwaters finally receded, and the farmer promised Moah he would never flood the farm ever again. Ten years later, Moah finally died. His sons and their families repopulated the land, and it was good. However, generations later, the ants again began to go their own way, trying to build a ramp that would reach to the outside word. This displeased the farmer, as he saw them trying to conspire together against him. The very smart farmer again began to genetically alter the ants, creating many new species of ants who could only communicate and work with their kind, and spread them all across the farm.

  1. Wow! What a fun story! I enjoyed reading your version of Noah and the Ark. I liked that your characters are ants. I could picture Moah and his family building the raft and heading to safety.

  2. This was a fun twist to the story of Noah and the Ark that also could really show a deeper message! Basically that humans were so simple minded compared to God and that they can kind of become the same if they're not careful. Your story was pretty directly translated from the story of Noah and the Ark and that made the parallels much more clear. If that's your goal, awesome! It could also be fun to add some other fictional elements to make your reader figure it out!

  3. Noah, but in ant form, I love it! I really like how the initial ants created by the farmer seemed to have characteristics opposite of what we typically associate with ants, who are hard workers and team-oriented. One thing I was a bit curious about, and would like to see further developed, is why the farmer was genetically modifying bugs in the first place. Did the farmer have a scientific background and history of genetically engineering bugs? Or was the farmer trying to create the ultimate farm bug that could help keep other pests away? Maybe, you could also add a small adventure of the family collecting twigs and food for their stay on the raft, I think that would add some more engaging elements. I also like how at the end, the farmer begins to genetically modify more ants, explaining why there are so many different types of ants. It would be cool to see all the types of ants he created and what ideas he had in mind for them. I really liked your story and the twist you put on a classical tale, as I usually see retellings with other humans, not with insects!
